There was a soft rap on Juliannaâs door. She wanted to tell whoever was there to go away, but curiosity and manners got the best of her and instead she called, âCome in.â
Shane peeked his blonde head in, watching his sister with eyes so much like her own. His eyes reminded her of a simpler life. Running through the valley as carefree kids. Riding bikes in the street. Playing in a park. Shaneâs eyes reminded her of home.
âHey,â he said by way of greeting. He walked over to the bed where she was sitting up, under the covers, and sat down next to her. âThank you for taking Henna and Kara with you. To meet Damian. I mean, Kara is a bit young, but Iâm glad you didnât go alone.â
Of course he knew. He looked so much like the kid brother she had always protected, it was easy to forget that he didnât need her anymore. Hell, it was she who needed his protection now.
âDamian is harmless,â Julianna answered. She knew sheâd been taking a risk when sheâd gone, but now that it was over and no harm had come to any of them, the worry had been senseless. No reason to go on about it.
Shane nodded once, but moved on. âDid he tell you why he wanted to turn back?â
âHe said he never felt like he fit in.â
âDo you believe him?â
Julianna sighed. âI know if someone doesnât want to be a monster anymore, I donât see why the whole world has to care. Who else gets harmed if Damian makes this choice and the witches agree? Even if it doesnât work, only Damian dies.â
Shane looked away. He wanted to handle this delicately. For all his power and ability to control the elements, he had no trick up his sleeve for breaking bad news. And no vampire that he knew had ever wanted to keep a relationship with his human sister before, so there was no precedent for any of this. âWhat if I told you, Damian is the beginning of the end?â
Julianna looked at his face. Shane was many things, but overly dramatic wasnât one of them. She knew he was a great leader because he cared, truly cared, about his family. Humans, vampires, witches. All of them had a place in this home. âHow can that be true?â
âI had a vision, Jules,â Shane looked right up and locked eyes with his sister. âThe ritual with Damian will work. And then others will follow, by choice in the beginning. But the curse will spread and others will transform without their consent. And vampires will be eradicated, just as the Dark Prophecy foretold.â
He didnât appear to be teasing her, but his story didnât make sense. âThatâs ridiculous.â But she didnât sound convincing, even to herself. She had always believed in the prophecy. It was hard to start questioning things now. But her human mind processed things slightly differently. âTurning human isnât a curse, Shane.â
But before Shane could retort with the vampire perspective, the bedroom door opened unceremoniously and Luke swept in.
