12.

There was a soft rap on Julianna’s door. She wanted to tell whoever was there to go away, but curiosity and manners got the best of her and instead she called, “Come in.”

Shane peeked his blonde head in, watching his sister with eyes so much like her own. His eyes reminded her of a simpler life. Running through the valley as carefree kids. Riding bikes in the street. Playing in a park. Shane’s eyes reminded her of home.

“Hey,” he said by way of greeting. He walked over to the bed where she was sitting up, under the covers, and sat down next to her. “Thank you for taking Henna and Kara with you. To meet Damian. I mean, Kara is a bit young, but I’m glad you didn’t go alone.”

Of course he knew. He looked so much like the kid brother she had always protected, it was easy to forget that he didn’t need her anymore. Hell, it was she who needed his protection now.

“Damian is harmless,” Julianna answered. She knew she’d been taking a risk when she’d gone, but now that it was over and no harm had come to any of them, the worry had been senseless. No reason to go on about it.

Shane nodded once, but moved on. “Did he tell you why he wanted to turn back?”

“He said he never felt like he fit in.”

“Do you believe him?”

Julianna sighed. “I know if someone doesn’t want to be a monster anymore, I don’t see why the whole world has to care. Who else gets harmed if Damian makes this choice and the witches agree? Even if it doesn’t work, only Damian dies.”

Shane looked away. He wanted to handle this delicately. For all his power and ability to control the elements, he had no trick up his sleeve for breaking bad news. And no vampire that he knew had ever wanted to keep a relationship with his human sister before, so there was no precedent for any of this. “What if I told you, Damian is the beginning of the end?”

Julianna looked at his face. Shane was many things, but overly dramatic wasn’t one of them. She knew he was a great leader because he cared, truly cared, about his family. Humans, vampires, witches. All of them had a place in this home. “How can that be true?”

“I had a vision, Jules,” Shane looked right up and locked eyes with his sister. “The ritual with Damian will work. And then others will follow, by choice in the beginning. But the curse will spread and others will transform without their consent. And vampires will be eradicated, just as the Dark Prophecy foretold.”

He didn’t appear to be teasing her, but his story didn’t make sense. “That’s ridiculous.” But she didn’t sound convincing, even to herself. She had always believed in the prophecy. It was hard to start questioning things now. But her human mind processed things slightly differently. “Turning human isn’t a curse, Shane.”

But before Shane could retort with the vampire perspective, the bedroom door opened unceremoniously and Luke swept in.
